PRIMARIES / WOODS captures the full woodwind family — bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe, and saxophone — across over one hundred multisampled articulations and a variety of distinct spatial environments.
Extended techniques and detailed solo performances merge into rich ensemble arrangements, capturing a wide spectrum of expressive orchestral colour.
THE TEXTURE OF WIND
Recorded at our Bristol studio, each articulation captures the physical exchange between player and instrument — the pressure of breath through reed, bore and embouchure, unfolding in hyper-detail.
The sessions were designed with composition in mind, capturing both harmonic beauty and textural friction to give every note a wide expressive scope. Each articulation offers a deep range of expression across dynamics, offering a broad compositional palette from a single instrument.

ICONIC SPATIAL IMPRINTS
The recordings were re-amplified through four iconic spaces and processes, each transforming the woodwind source material with a different spatial character.
These perspectives can be blended, isolated and modulated within the engine, turning a single articulation into a range of tonal environments.

The iconic Funkhaus studios in East Berlin, designed by Bauhaus architect Franz Erlich, was historically used as a broadcast complex for German radio. Its cavernous echo chamber is a cathedral of brutalist concrete and cubist angles, imbuing recordings with industrial reflections that are simultaneously haunting and beautiful.

Founded by Peter Gabriel, Real World Studios is renowned for its blend of natural acoustic environments. Its Wood Room offers a beautifully naturalistic resonance, with timber surfaces that create a warm, organic ambience. This space allows sound to breathe, imbuing recordings with an earthy, intimate character that feels both inviting and rich in texture.

The EMT 140 plate reverb at Bristol’s Invada Studios is revered for its lush, metallic bloom. Steeped in analogue recording history, its reflective quality gives the string recordings a luminous texture, full of vintage warmth and shimmering resonance.

The iconic Bricasti M7 reverb unit is celebrated for its spatial authenticity, pure tonal clarity, and widescreen sophistication. Known for its crystal clear realism, the M7 preserves the warmth and character of the woodwinds while enhancing their scale within an expansive hall sound.

PRIMARIES / WOODS is a full-spectrum collection of uniquely expressive woodwind articulations, capturing the physical friction of the entire woodwind family.
The bassoon and saxophone reveal the tremble of the reed — saw-tooth overtones and guttural friction at full force, warm sub-tones at softer dynamics. Clarinet and oboe move between hollow bore resonance and formant-rich sustains that fracture into harmonic clusters. The flute ranges from crystal-clear purity to granular breaking points where breath takes over from pitch.

The spatial mixer redefines a sound’s environment with an intuitive, creative approach to blending spatial perspectives that opens up new artistic possibilities. Sound sources are positioned within a virtual two-dimensional soundstage and from there can be immersed in rich reverberation, adjusted precisely through parameter controls, isolated for focused detail, or expanded to introduce the resonances of the recording spaces. LFOs and user-defined gestures add further dimension, enabling dynamic, physical movement throughout the space.
